Jon Ossoff, the Democrat’s Congressional nominee for Georgia’s 6th District, is not just battling for votes in this June 20th runoff election. He is in a high stakes skirmish against one of fattest opposition funds around. The Congressional Leadership Fund (CLF) out of Washington, D.C., has dedicated millions – $5,923,919.27 to be exact – in opposing the 30-year-old millennial and former Congressional aide.
Ossoff hopes to take the House seat vacated by the HHS Secretary Tom Price. The special election in Georgia pits him against Karen Handel, who is receiving support from this same fund, though in much smaller dollar figures.
The CLF was seeded by a $20 million contribution last fall by Sheldon and Miriam Adelson, stalwart GOP patrons. Although defined as nonpartisan by its FEC filing, the entity collects money to either support GOP House candidates or oppose Democratic challengers for House seats.
Below is an itemization of CLF contributions collected in opposition to Ossoff:
Donations to Karen Handel are far less hefty, which indicates CLF donors are more comfortable opposing Ossoff than supporting the GOP nominee. (Source: FEC)
