Manafort Trial Day 5 Preview

The prosecution is crafting a seamless, fact-based case against Paul Manafort, using his own financial team and tomes of documents to prove his guilt.

This is trial number one for Manafort, who ran the Trump campaign in the summer of 2016. At stake is his own freedom, all his property, even a life insurance policy, stripping both he and his family of the wealth and comfort they have enjoyed for years.

Day 5 could include damning testimony from Rick Gates, who worked for Manafort during his illegal dealings in Ukraine and has knowledge of the alleged money laundering schemes and bank fraud named in the 32-count indictment.

Gates, who acted as a Trump campaign official with Manafort, was also a member of the Trump transition team. He has pleaded guilty and is cooperating with Special Counsel Robert Mueller. Named in the original indictment, charges against Gates were dropped when he agreed to work with the prosecution.

After four days in court, the bulk of witnesses have yet to testify. Any of the following persons on Mueller’s list of 35 witnesses could be on the stand today. That list (below) includes four of the five people granted limited immunity as well as Gates and 15 others.

Alex Trusco, a former employee of the defendant, led investigators for Mueller to a trove of his papers stashed away in a storage unit. Manafort ordered Trusco to relocate these documents after a reporter tipped off Manafort.

Both Dennis Raico and James Brennan worked for Stephen Calk, the CEO of the small Federal Savings Bank of Chicago. The bank loaned Manafort $16 million, and Manafort promised Calk a position in the Trump administration as Secretary of the Army in a quid pro quo arrangement. Both Raico and Brennan have immunity for their testimony.

A number of witnesses are not readily identifiable and may be representatives of the FBI or IRS.
